Rock Garden Plants A to Z:
BACK
Acer- (Japanese Maple)

A. palmatum 'Dissectum' |
Most Acers are trees- these include the stately Maples and Sycamores.
The Japanese Maples, however, are compact and slow-growing, and if you choose
carefully they make splendid specimen shrubs for the larger rock garden.
They are planted for their attractive growth habit and their divided leaves
in green, red and purple. The color of the non-green varieties may be year-round
or appear only in autumn. This foliage needs some protection from morning
sun and cold winds.
VARIETIES:
It
is surprising that Japanese Maples appear in so few catalogues offering rock
garden plants, but you should have no difficulty in finding them at your
garden centre. Pick a variety of A. palmatum
'Dissectum'. The shrub is very slow growing
reaching 3-4 ft. and the branches spread horizontally. The leaves are deeply
cut and divided. The year-round purple leaved form is
A. palmatum 'Dissectum
Atropurpureum'. The variety
A. palmatum 'Osakazuki'
turns red in autumn.
SITE
& SOIL: Requires a neutral or acid soil. Grows best in partial
shade.
PROPAGATION:
Buy from a garden center or nursery.
