Alchemilla- (Alpine Lady's Mantle)

Alchemilla alpina
Alchemilla alpina

Alchemilla mollis is the popular herbaceous border species, but it is too large for the rockery. The Alpine Lady's Mantles are much more compact, forming hummocks of lobed leaves. During the summer fluffy branching sprays of tiny yellow flowers appear, but Alchemilla is grown for its foliage rather than its blooms. Its advantage is that it is very easy to grow in either rock or peat gardens. Its drawback is that the self-seedingcan mean unwanted plants appearing anywhere.
VARIETIES: A. alpine is a common wild flower in the Alps- height  6 in. spread 1 ft. flowering period June - August. The leaves are dark green above the silvery edges and the silver below. Some of the foliage dies down in winter. Other miniature Alchemillas include A. erythropoda (similar but less invasive than A. alpine), A. conjuncta and A. ellenbeckii (long trailing stems). alpine is a common wild flower in the Alps- height 6in. spread 1 ft. flowering period June - August.
