Rock Garden Plants A to Z:
BACK
Armeria- (Thrift, Sea Pink)

Armeria caespitosa |
You will find Armeria growing wild around the sea-shore and in countless
rock gardens. The evergreen grassy leaves form dense mounds and tiny flowers
in ball-like papery heads appear on top of thin stalks- A good plant for
a sunny spot. It will naturalise on stone walls and in rocky crevices. The
only problem is a tendency for the middle of the clump to die out.
VARIETIES: Our native
Thrift is
A. maritima
(height 8 in., spread 1 ft., flowering period May-July). The flower-heads
are about 1 in. in diameter- the color of the species is pink and so are
some of the named varieties such as
'Merlin',
'Laucheana', and
'Perfection'. Other colors are available- look for
'Dusseldorf
Pride' (crimson),
'Vindictive' (bright red),
'Bloodstone'(deep red), and
'Alba' (white).
For a more compact Thrift choose A.
ceaspitosa (
A.
juniperifolia
) - height 3 in., spread 9 in., flowering period April-May.
The pink or white flower-heads are almost stemless.
SITE
& SOIL: Any well-drained soil will do.
PROPAGATION:

summer.
