Aubrieta- (Rock Cress, Aubrietia)

Aubrieta deltoidea 'Aureovariegata'
Aubrieta deltoidea 'Aureovariegata'

It is perhaps not surprising that Aubrieta is the most widely grown of all rock garden plants. It is vigorous, tolerant of a wide range of conditions and extremely colorful when covering a sloping bank in spring. In the average-sized rockery it certainly has a place, but it should not be allowed to take over. Cut back hard after flowering to keep it in check and to induce a second flush of flowers in autumn.
VARIETIES: The basic species is A. deltoides (height 3-5 in., spread 2 ft., flowering period April-June).The grey-green leaves are downy and blooms about 3/4 in. across. The species is not grown- the garden varieties are hybrids and there are many from which to choose. A few popular ones are 'Aureovariegata' (lavender flowers, gold variegated leaves), 'Bressingham Pink' (double pink), 'Doctor Mules' (purple), 'Red Carpet' (red), 'Carnival' (deep violet), 'Gloriosa' (rose-pink), 'Wanda' (double pale red) and 'Dream' (pale blue).
SITE & SOIL: Any well-drained, non-acid soil - thrives in light shade.
PROPAGATION: Divide clumps or sow seeds under glass in spring or summer.
