Rock Garden Plants A to Z:
BACK
Cyananthus- (Trailing Bellflower)

Cyananthus microphyllus |
This low growing alpine appears in most text-books but it is hard
to find in the catalogues and garden centers. It shoud be better known, as
it is an excellent choice if there is a damp but well-drained spot to fill
and if you live in a cool district. The prostrate matted stem bears solitary
flowers at their tips. Cyananthus is closely related to Campanula, but it
usually bears funnel-shaped blooms with wide-open lobes rather than bells
or stars. Slugs can be a problem.
VARIETIES:
C.
microphyllus is the most likely to survive the British climate in winter. Basic
details are height 3 in., spread 1 ft., flowering period August-September.
The clear blue flowers are tubular with five narrow petal lobes spreading
about 1 in. across. White and dark blue varieties are available.
C.
lobatus is also quite reliable- it is taller than the previous species and
the flowers bear wide petal lobes. The usual color is bright blue.
C.
Sheriffii needs to be kept
indoors.
SITE
& SOIL: Requires well-drained, humus-rich soil - thrives in
light shade.
PROPAGATION:
Sow seeds under glass in spring or plant stem cuttings in
a cold frame in late spring.
