Rock Garden Plants A to Z:
BACK
Haberlea- (Haberlea)

Haberlea rhodopensis |
Many of the rock garden plants listed in this section are easy to
grow and not at all fussy about location. This attractive alpine, like its
close relative Ramonda, is quite different. It will not grow unless the
conditions are just right. This calls for acid soil in a shady spot and water
must not be allowed to stand in the heart of the rosette of leaves in winter.
The usual advice is to plant it sideways in the crack between the stones
on the north-facing side of the rockery, but the best place of all is between
peat blocks.
VARIETIES:
The ones you are most likely to find in the garden center or catalogues is
H.
rhodopensis. Basic details are height 4 in., spread 8 in., flowering period
May-June. There is a rosette of leathery toothed leaves and the stalks bear
clusters of lilac flowers which are tubular and about 1 in. across. A white
variety
('Virginalis') is available.
H. ferdinandi-coburgii
is larger and the lilac flowers are flecked with
gold.
SITE
& SOIL: Requires well-drained but damp soil with little or
no direct sun.
PROPAGATION:
Divide clumps in autumn or plant leaf cuttings in a cold frame
in summer.
