Origanum- (Majoram)

Origanum amanum |
Apart from one colorful variety the ordinary Majoram (O. vulgare)
is too coarse for the rock garden, but there are several rockey varieties.
The growth habit is shrubby and in summer pink or purple flowers appear.
These small and rather insignificant flowers are partly covered by bracts.
These dwarf Organums are sun-lovers and are only moderately hardy- either
cover with a cloche during frostly weather or grow in an alpine house.
VARIETIES:
The best rockery species for growing outdoors is
O.
amanum - height 3 in., spread 6 in., flowering period July-September. During
this period the ground-hugging mat of leafy stems is covered by elongated
pink flowers.
O.
disctamus
(Amaracus
dictamnus) is different- the plant is larger and forms a wooly-leaved clumps.
The pink flowers are borne in Hop-like heads of large purplish bracts.
O.
vulgare
'Aureum' is grown for its yellow foliage which is especially bright in
spring.

& SOIL:
