Rock Garden Plants A to Z:
BACK
Rhodohypoxis- (Rhodopoxis)

Rhodohypoxis bauri |
This South African alpine has none of the robust hardiness found
in some of the popular plants which have come to us from the European Alps.
it is not, however, quite as delicate as some text-books claim, and there
is no reason why you should not try this small beauty in a sheltered site
in Central and Southern England. Add peat at planting time, top the dress
around the crown with grit, and water in the growing season during periods
of dry weather.
VARIETIES:
Choose a variety of
R. baurli
- height 2 ft., spread 3 in., flowering period April-September.
White, bpink, rose and purple are the colors available. Tufts of narrow leaves
are produced by the corn-like roots and the flowers are unusual - there is
an outer ring of three petals and an inner ring of three petals. The attractive
flower form and the exceptional length of the flowering season make Rhodohypoxis
an excellent subject for a pot, sink garden or a tiny pocket in the rock
garden.
SITE
& SOIL:
Requires well-drained gritty soil which is lime-free. Full sun is
essential.
PROPAGATION:
Divide clumps in autumn.
