Rock Garden Plants A to Z:
BACK
Tanacetum- (Tansy)

Tanacetum densum amani |
A large genus of plants usually associated with the large-flowered
representatives such as T. coccineum grown in the herbaceous border. Only
two or three sopecies have a place in the rock garden. These are generally
grown for their silvery leaves rather then their white or yellow flowers.
The blooms are button-like with only disc florets or distinctly Daisy-like
with both disc and ray florets. Tanacetum must have good drainage - it does
well in pots of compost outdoors or in the alpine house.
VARIETIES:
T. densum amani
is the one you are most likely to find in the catalogues. It may
be listed as
Chrysanthemum
haradjani. Feathery silver-grey leaves which look like filigree form dense
6 in. high mounds. The summer flowers are small yellow buttons surrounded
by grey wooly bracts.
T. herderi
is a 9 in. bush which bears silvery foliage and small heads of yellow
flowers.
SITE
& SOIL:
Requires well-drained open soil - full sun is essential.
PROPAGATION:
plant stem cuttings in a cold frame in early
summer.
