Tulipa- (Species Tulip)

Tulipa pulchella
Tulipa pulchella

For the rock garden we turn to the dwarfs amongst the Species Tulips rather than to the popular Garden Hybrids. November to December is the usual time for planting- Bedding Tulips are lifted when flowering is over and the foliage has turned yellow, but some Species Tulips are left in the ground over winter.
VARIETIES: The list is enormous if you wish to be adventurous, but only tried and tested ones are included here.
T. pulchella is tiny 4 in. dwarf - white, pink and violet varieties are available. T. tarda is another minature, with several star-shaped white and yellow flowers on each stem. It blooms in April-May like nearly all Tulips - for March flower grow. T. kuafmanniana (6-10 in.) This is the Water-lily Tulip which has many varieties. T. praestans 'Fusilier' (orange-red) has become popular - T. greigii (8 in.-1 ft.) with brown-mottled foliage is an old favorite. Others to look for are T. clusiana, T. vyedenski, T. batalini and T. aucheriana.
SITE & SOIL: Requires well-drained soil in full sun.
PROPAGATION: Remove bulbets when lifting clumps. Dry, store and replant in late autumn.

Water Garden & Serene Pond keeping is a journey: "We hope you enjoy yours"!
