Rock Garden Plants A to Z:
BACK
Tulipa- (Species Tulip)

Tulipa pulchella |
For the rock garden we turn to the dwarfs amongst the Species Tulips
rather than to the popular Garden Hybrids. November to December is the usual
time for planting- Bedding Tulips are lifted when flowering is over and the
foliage has turned yellow, but some Species Tulips are left in the ground
over winter.
VARIETIES:
The list is enormous if you wish to be adventurous, but only tried and tested
ones are included here.
T. pulchella
is tiny 4 in. dwarf - white, pink and violet varieties are available.
T.
tarda is another minature, with several star-shaped white and yellow flowers
on each stem. It blooms in April-May like nearly all Tulips - for March flower
grow.
T. kuafmanniana
(6-10 in.) This is the Water-lily Tulip which has many varieties.
T. praestans
'Fusilier' (orange-red) has become popular -
T.
greigii (8 in.-1 ft.) with brown-mottled foliage is an old favorite. Others
to look for are
T.
clusiana,
T.
vyedenski,
T.
batalini and
T.
aucheriana.
SITE
& SOIL:
Requires well-drained soil in full sun.
PROPAGATION:
Remove bulbets when lifting clumps. Dry, store and replant in
late
autumn.
